How to Ensure Your Smoke Alarm, Fire Alarms, and Burglar Alarms Are Working

security panelProtecting your home should be at the heart of your routine tasks. You probably take some basic steps each day. You turn off the lights outside. You lock doors and windows. And, you have a good home insurance policy in place.

Home insurance can minimize losses associated with a home’s break in or fire exposure.

But, have you spent any time looking at your current systems to make sure they were working at their best? These tips can help you to ensure the systems keeping your home safe are in fact working the way they should.

What’s In Place Protecting Your Home?

If you do not have any type of system in place for security, it is a good idea to consider using one. Investing in a security system is often relatively inexpensive. It can provide you with a number of advantages. Once you install these systems, you’ll want to contact your home insurance provider to let them know. This could help you save some money on insurance premiums.

Then, consider these tips:

  • Your home’s smoke alarm will have a battery backup that will beep when you need to replace the battery. Don’t wait for this. Instead, change the batteries every six months.
  • Look for those smoke alarms that can sense heat as well as smoke. When you upgrade to these, you’ll see improved function. To ensure these are working, test them at least one time a month. This is a good time to make sure your family knows how to evaluate too.
  • For security systems and burglar alarms, the only surefire way to make sure they are working well is to try to get into your home from the outside when the system is armed. Look for ways to do so. Find out if the alarm sounds and be sure you are arming it every time you leave the property.

By taking these steps, you’ll minimize the risks you face every time you leave your home. You will feel good about knowing your home is safe as well. Your home insurance is there for when claims do happen. But, there’s nothing like the peace of mind of knowing your family is safe to start with the security that these systems offer.

Do you have smoke and fire alarms in your home? While home insurance can help with the costs of overcoming loss, you also need to make sure these systems are working now.
